Benefits

Desktop Metal's Studio System 2 offers metal 3D printing for office environments in a two-step process: print and sinter.

First benefit: Simple process with only two steps

Manufacturing complex metal parts has never been so easy. The Studio System 2 offers an innovative two-step manufacturing process, the next generation of Breakaway Brackets, and a software-controlled workflow making it easier than ever to fabricate custom metal parts.

From printing directly to sintering

Studio System 2 offers a unique innovation: a two-step process and a completely redesigned catalog of materials. New material formulations allow printed parts to be put directly into the oven, without the need for the typical solvent phase. The result is a process that is easy to manage, with only two steps, free of chemicals and with virtually no manual intervention

Software controlled workflow

You don't need to be an expert in metallurgy or machining to create complex metal parts. With our Fabricate software, native to Studio System 2, all aspects of part creation, from printing to sintering, are automated.

The software automatically scales your part, orients it for the printing and sintering process, generates separable supports, and applies advanced metallurgical techniques to optimize manufacturing. Simply upload your design and follow the instructions in the software interface for a step-by-step guide.

Smart separable supports

Studio System 2 features second generation detachable support technology that automatically prints a reformulated ceramic interface between the support structures and the part, allowing parts to be easily separated from their supports by hand.

User friendly hardware

With easy-to-use hardware, Studio System 2 lets you spend less time managing and operating machines, and more time designing and manufacturing parts.

Change heads at the touch of a button, and replace materials quickly with the refillable cartridge system that allows the user to insert material during printing, and store excess material separately.

A set of printer and sintering system, with configurable oven, offer a solution with maximum flexibility.

Second benefit: high-quality parts

Easily produce difficult-to-machine parts including complex geometries such as cavities or internal channels. Fabricate, the software at the heart of the Studio System, automates complex metalworking processes to produce high-quality parts with cast-like densities and precisions.

Reliable Process

Studio System 2 benefits from data and feedback from thousands of impressions and hundreds of customers. Designed to provide amazing part success and excellent surface quality, the system enables users to achieve guaranteed first part success regardless of geometry. This is achieved thanks to a fully purpose-built materials platform, an updated interface and new print profiles.

Excellent Part Properties

A heated print chamber and print profiles developed by Desktop Metal specifically for BMD provide excellent surface finishes without the need for post-processing. Meanwhile, a very strong filling lightens the pieces. With materials that meet or exceed MPIF standards and use a high-density metal media, high-pressure extrusion, and vacuum sintering at temperatures up to 1,400 degrees Celsius, the system produces parts with densities up to 98%, similar to to castings.

Customizable Printing Parameters

Studio System 2 allows you to customize parts to meet your specific needs. Print parts with walls up to 4 mm. thick or completely solid, without interior pattern, up to 5.25 mm. of thickness. Adjust the thickness of the surface to create stronger parts or facilitate faster processing. Optimize prints for faster speeds using the standard 400 micron head or print very fine details with the high resolution 250 micron head.

Third benefit: Designed for the office

Studio System 2 was designed from the ground up with your team's workflow in mind. Without solvents, without metal powder or lasers, and with minimal operator intervention, the system makes it super easy to start printing metal parts, without requiring any third-party equipment or any special installations or infrastructure.

No Special Installation Requirements

Studio System 2 offers a two-step process that eliminates the need for solvents and uses materials that can be easily stored and handled, making it ideal for use in an office environment. No need for special facilities or PPE for breathing. All you need is an internet connection, ventilation and power, making it super easy to start 3D printing metal parts.

Unattended Process

Studio System 2 helps you regain control of the prototyping workflow by allowing design and engineering teams to focus on making the best products possible. The streamlined, easy-to-manage process makes it easy for users to quickly iterate on designs, print parts, and monitor manufacturing progress from their desks, greatly reducing operator effort. Parts go directly from the printer to the furnace, where a large footprint with stackable trays (10x capacity compared to similarly sized tube furnaces) makes batch sintering easy.

How it works?

Simply load a CAD file into Fabricate, our proprietary software, print your part, and put it in the furnace to sinter.

Preparation

Our cloud-based software develops construction drawings directly from STL or CAD files, automatically generating supports and print parameters based on the geometry and material of the part to be printed.

Print

Layer by layer, a "green" part is shaped by extruding bars of bonded metal (metal powder held together by polymer binders) in a process called BMD (Bound Metal Deposition).

Sinter

Once printed, the pieces are placed in the oven. As the part is heated to near-melting temperatures, the binder is removed and the metal particles fuse together causing the part to densify up to 98%.

Studio System 2

Stydio System 2 is a two-part solution that automates metal 3D printing.

Printer

Unlike laser-based systems that selectively fuse metal powder, the Studio System 2 extrudes bonded metal bars much like an FDM printer works. This removes most of the safety requirements typically associated with metal 3D printing, while also enabling new features such as the use of fully sealed internal webs for maximum strength with the least weight.

Drying Oven

Designed to be the most user-friendly sinter furnace ever made, the Studio System 2 furnace first heats the parts to remove the binder from the parts. It is then heated to near melting point of the processed metal to deliver industrial sintering properties in an office friendly package. Integrated temperature profiles, adjusted for each print and each material, ensure uniform heating and cooling without the problems of stress and internal tensions common in laser-based systems
